Re: Sub woofer to 003
Good subs for the studio are not like subs for your home stereo. Studio subs use the same out you're using now for your Events. Then the Events plug into the subs. The subs take the low signal and pass the rest on to the Events.
Note: Good subs are $$$$ Before dumping a grand on a sub I'd make sure your room is set up acoustically the best it can be. You may find you don't need the sub. I speak from experience. |

Re: Sub woofer to 003
Sven said it well and here's more to think about. I use the KRK Rokit sub but in a slightly unorthodox way. First, I feed my monitors(same as you BTW) from a Presonus Central Station(A out) and the C out feeds a digital crossover on the way to the subwoofer. Now you are wondering why, and here is the explanation. In my setup, I am stuck with the sub closer to me than the mains, so I needed to delay them by about a foot and a half to get them in line. I also use the crossover to shape the slope for a steeper roll off to avoid some buildup around 110Hz. This setup also allows me to take the sub out as my room as a little funky. The couch behind me(back wall) gets a nice balance all the way down to the lowest octave without the sub. In my chair, the lowest octave is missing(my chair is almost centered front to back which is not a good spot for low frequencies in the room). Adding the sub makes the sound accurate in my chair so I can mix/hear correctly without having to constantly jump back onto the couch. When clients are in the couch, I keep the sub off. If your room is decent and your mix position good(38% away from the front wall is ideal) then you may be just fine by running L/R to the sub and on to the mains. Just don't be tempted to crank the sub up for "slamming" low end as that may cause your mixes to be thin sounding on other systems. "Shooting the room" with a good analyzer is the best way to set the sub volume but you can do it by ear and use the signal generator plugin on an aux track and listen as you nudge the frequency(use a sine wave) sweeping slowly from 500Hz down to 40Hz. It is pretty obvious when a frequency either disappears or jumps out as really hot. A properly adjusted sub can be a good thing, while a poorly adjusted sub can make your mixes worse.
