OK . . the avid board works on a newer MacBook Pro with no audio programs installed, but not MBP running PT. Functions like command Q work, but space bar, no. I've re-pluged, reselected inputs.

As I said before - PT doesn't care what computer keyboard it's getting it's commands from. That it seems to work on a newer MacBookPro with no audio programs is a fluke. Again the fact that PT works okay with the laptop's internal keyboard puts the problem on the keyboard.

What would help is if you tell us what is the EXACT 'Avid' keyboard you are using. If it's a keyboard that resembles the usual Apple external keyboard except for the keytops I'd put the onus for the problem on whoever did the keytop swap. Turn the 'Avid' keyboard over and tell us - do you see the Apple logo in the plastic underside?

the keyboard has the colored keys, on the space bar it says . .logic keyboard.
Avid designed for PT. On the back is. . . B/N 20160607BN1-16 and nothing else.

Sounds like you're talking about this one: http://logickeyboard.com/shop/pro-tools-mac-2413p.html and if so it's like I said before - a standard Apple keyboard they put their own keytops on, nothing more. I'd say you have a flaky keyboard. Have you tried it in another USB port? Is the keyboard plugged straight into the MBP or through a port adapter or a hub?

This board is maybe 3 years old. So a keyboard can just fail? It does perform some functions. Board on MBP works perfectly as well as PT

Yep. The keyswitch action can get tired and wear out with keys failing on a random basis. Think about it - the space bar is probably the single most used key on the whole keyboard. Plus if stuff gets dumped on it that can/will hasten it's demise.

Well this will be the first keyboard I've seen fail. So what's your recommendation for a better keyboard.

Get a regular wired Apple keyboard if you can find one as Apple stopped selling the long keyboard with keypad some time ago. And learn the PT shortcuts.
