Default Passive/Active

I just can't find out which is better for monitors: powered or passive w/ an amp.
it seems better to have the whole thing in one pakage--less noise from amplifier fans, etc. less room, too! am i missing something? is the fidelity any different given same speaker?
thanks for reading.
