Default CoreAudio Manager, please help me understand

Is current pro tools software built and designed to specifically recognise 002/003, or is the core audio manager working with pro tools after installation. My 003 works on my computer as a stand alone device without having pro tools installed, so what is happening on pro tools 10 installation. Does Avid replace the 003 driver in order to work correctly with pro tools? What would happen if Avid eventually didn't make software that supported 003? Would the interface simply not work, or would it be able to be used as a stand alone device within pro tools?

I hope my question makes sense. Can any one help me to understand how Core Audio works with Pro tools software.

Pro Tools has dedicated drivers to work with Pro Tools.

Core audio is the audio standard used by mac, much like asio or wdm within windows.

The core audio driver allows you to use your 002/003 with third applications like logic, cubase etc as well as the mac OS.

If digi stop developing drivers then yes your hardware becomes a massive door wedge.

Core audio with the 002/003 has always been a PIA and it's not until you move away from the Avid hardware that you realize just how bad it is so my advice to you would be to ditch it now as it is now discontinued.

The core audio manager is just the piece of software that allows you to configure the core audio driver, clocking, samples rate etc.
