Have you tested that mixes with greater than 20 tracks null over multiple passes with the same mix engine? i.e. there's not a plugin that is non-deterministic in the path? You've got me curious to test now.

Hopefully it has some kind of wrapper for native AAX to work as AAX DSP as well or this still is not worth going to HDX.

HTDM was a bad idea back in the day, but at that time it was needed. Now it does not matter if you throw AAX-native or AAX-DSP to the mixer, no problem. RTAS/TDM did not live so well together in the beginning of native days.

It seems most likely to me that it will work the same as Carbon. You will need an AAX-DSP version of the plugin in order to track with the low latency DSP path.

Isn't Carbon all messed up right now? I'd rather stay pure hdx3. Or add more hdx cards in the 7.1 mac pro. I think it will work with 6.

I haven't heard anything about Carbon being all messed up but then again I don't use it nor do I actively seek information on it.

The potential of using the hybrid engine with HDX is huge to me. No need for multiple cards just to achieve a higher track count because you'll be using the CPU to power the mixer which resolves the voice count limitation of the DSP on the HDX card. I think hybrid coming to HDX is going to be a BFD.

But hell, if you can afford a 7.1 Mac Pro and six HDX cards then go for it! More power to ya!

So we will run the mix engine natively now? I don't like how the native mix engine sounds compared to the HDX mix engine. Or at least I didn't the last time I tested it. Have things changed?

Yeah, I read the Carbon stuff and saw the coming-soon blurb. So there's a button to change a Native plugin to DSP while the rest of whatever plugins use Native - or DSP. But we've always been able to do that. So confused why I should want this? I mean, time will tell for sure.

Maybe it's to offload the mixing chores to the native CPU so the card can just run plugins?
Don't know about this sound difference in mix engine you are taking about (But I then have never had HDX)

But I can answer some of the above.

Before "Hybrid" in an HDX system you could run native plugins and DSP plugins in the same session,,,, BUT they were all running on the the HDX mixer. The native plugs were in native mode, DSP plugs in DSP mode BUT all were running on the HDX Mixer chips.

With Hybrid only the plugins running in DSP mode (on tracks in DSP mode) are running on the HDX mixer chips . Any plugs on tracks still in "native mode" are running on the computer CPU (not the HDX chips) And native only plugs that are on tracks in DSP mode are bypassed OR you can put that track in DSP Safe which takes the track out of DSP and then any plugs are then running in Native mode

Here is a video I did about Carbon but explains running Hybrid

no, not at all.

Carbon is super solid, as is the Hybrid Mix engine with it.

I'm confused about what the Hybrid Engine brings to the table. Can anyone share more info?
tons of info here.

this article is not paywalled currently.

It's probably Avid's workaround for expanding HDX Voice count beyond 256 Voices
