Shure SM81. It needs less top-end EQ than the normal SM57, and the off-axis sound is less colored. Use the 10 pad. Try it!!!

Just for fun, I put five mics on a snare and recorded to five PT tracks. I liked the Audix D1 best, with the SM57 coming in second, and the Beta57 coming in third. The EV N/D408, which I use on snare for sound reinforcement for small concerts, was decent sounding, as was the EV N/D308.

I've heard of Audix, but never tried them.

Anyone tried a Sennheiser MD 421?

I use the Audix i5 regularly (and an Audix D6 for rock kicks). It generally beats the 57 on snare for me--needs less EQ. Sometimes I'll tape a Neumann KM100 or an AKG 414 to it (so it's phase aligned with the i5/57)--this gives the best of both worlds: the body and impact of the dynamic with the air and top of the condenser (this technique also works well on guitar amps as well).

I've always liked the B&K / DPA 4003 or 4006 for snares. Rent one and stick it very close to the batter head, being omni.

Okay, someone has to say it: THERE IS NO BEST!

The SM57 is a popular choice (and has been for many years), but as long as the mic can handle the SPL and is reasonably accurate, then it will "work". The only other mic I've seen in the studio on a snare is the SM7, to be honest, and I wouldn't want anybody less than pro going near the thing with a backbeat.

The MD 421 might not have the top end you're after (or it might have just enough beef). The only way to know is to try (don't roll off the low end at the base of that one!).

If you're not happy with your snare drum sound, change something at the source, be it the player, the drum, the tuning, or the room. Or replace it. As long as the mic is appropriate, and the positioning is the best it can be, that any one of the aforementioned will service the sound more than mic choice, IMHO. On the other hand, when everything sounds great (including the other instruments), and the whole band is warmed up, then change the snare mic, and really hear how things change.

If you take two different mics on the same snare (and all else is equal) and you A/B them, (surprise, surprise!) they'll sound different. But to make that one snare track work within a mix, you'll treat it differently than you would the other with EQ, compression, etc. There are simply too many variables to consider, never mind that we don't know anything about the sound you're going for.
