Default OT: Superdrive in a firewire case. Anyone ?

Hi,
Anyone removed their internal Superdrive and put in a firewire case?

We're planning to get an isolation box and I don't want to open/close the door frequently.

Yes we have done several systems with the Superdrive in a FireWire enclosure. Macally makes an enclosure and you'll need a FireWire cable.
Once you remove the drive from the CPU, you cannot use the SuperDrive as a boot drive as Apple will only boot from the internal drive bay, not the drive in an external enclosure.

or move the superdrive to the external and buy a simple CD-ROM for internal use.

I don't know if it's still the case, but in the past, to be used as a boot drive, it needed to be a drive with specific Apple firmware.

Also, to use certain Apple Applications, the Mac checks for the presence of the Superdrive. I wonder if it looks at the Firewire bus, or if it only looks at the ATA bus.

You might be better off buying a second Firewire Superdrive, and leaving the original intact.
