Default Avid HDX CoreAudio on Catalina

Does this work? With Ableton, selecting the HDX CoreAudio driver (obviously Pro Tools is quit) is very unreliable. Mostly it doesn't work and the MTRX briefly loses its connection with DADman. On the latest everything (2020.3 Pro Tools and HD driver).

That has been my experience with HDX and Ableton Live for quite a while now - possibly late 2018 onwards. I've just gotten used to sending my Omni audio via my system audio outputs when using Ableton. It seems to be specific to Ableton and HDX, as CoreAudio is working pretty well here for other applications. Much better than the 2019.12 HD driver which would jam up and do weird things when trying to change settings in audio midi setup.

Interesting! Well, I went back to ReWire'ing into Pro Tools – which I haven't used for years – and it seems to work pretty nicely. Just makes Ableton a bit less useful as a composing tool as you can't use third-party plugins, M4L, etc. (I also tried using Dante, either straight into the MTRX or via Pro Tools, but the latency is pretty bad. I don't really want to have to buy another audio interface just to use Ableton!)

Do you have dante on you MTRX? You could install dante virtual sound card and have any software like ableton send directly to DADman. It even gives you separate volume controls. And additional options to reroute the signal back into PT to record, etc.

Latency is the Dante unknown to most iMo
Not receiving a MTRX-Studio preorder yet...
1. Did you get the code for Dante' or pay extra?

Not sure if I'm understanding right but – I have a MTRX, the Dante option is just that (an option, a physical card that you need to install in the unit). I believe Dante is included with the MTRX Studio as a no-cost option, but best to check with Avid if you are unsure.

The latency I spoke of in my earlier post is due to using Dante Virtual Soundcard (DVS), which has a minimum Dante latency setting of 1ms, which increases once you include the application's buffer sizes. This latency would be obviated using a hardware solution such as a PCIe Dante card but, at that point there are other options (e.g. just a standard USB or Thunderbolt interface with AES/EBU or MADI outputs).

Thanks, Luke. At least now, I know the problem is with Ableton, not avid. I hope to see some results from your ticket with Ableton. In the meantime, I will try out the rewire option. Hopefully I will be able to record audio into Ableton this way.
