I'll bet Black Lion Audio could quadruple sales of their Omni / HD I/O upgrades if they threw in something like an "extreme quieting" modification...

I do not work for Avid (their loss)...my only relationship with Avid is that of a customer (when I'm not too poor to buy stuff, like now)...and that hot administrative assistant...that's more of a "thing" than a "relationship" (that should keep them guessing for a while...)

Just rockin'...what more is there?

That's a 2013 MacPro.

Edit:

Whoops, misspelling. It's a Hackintosh.

Okay you guys are gonna love me.

I've just today switched out the fans in BOTH my Omni and HDIO. Does this make me the first to take the plunge on the Omni?

I used this one for the HDIO: http://tinyurl.com/d5t3d4s

And this one for the Omni: http://tinyurl.com/cdtg3f7

If anyone is savvy on the electronics/fan front, let me know if you think I've made a horrific mistake or if these are all good!

It's about a million times easier to install in the HDIO than the Omni due to the space in the case and access to bolts etc etc. I'm not gonna claim mine look pretty on the inside but they definitely work and are pushing air in the right direction.

These fans have, so far, been dead silent. I've also got a Mytek 8 x 192 that I've never even realised had a fan and now I'm suddenly thinking I might have to open it up and do a switch.

On power up I'm used to the "jet plane briefly taking off" noise which is VERY noticable, with these fans I don't notice it.

I also rearranged my rack slightly - put my Omni below my HDIO, 1U with ventillated panel between it and the Omni, Mytek above that with another 1U to an Apogee Rosetta that I just run via firewire when I want Core Audio. There's now another 2U gap above the Rosetta to the top of the rack, I'm hoping this will allow air to move through okay.

UPDATE - while typing I believe a fan in either the Omni or HDIO stepped up a gear, it's gone from dead silent to barely audible.

I'll try to remember to come back periodically to let you all know if the Omni catches fire or keeps working happily ;-)

Wish me luck!

Thanks dude!
I just replaced the HD IO's fan myself, and I'm stunned by the difference.

I was looking for a replacement fan for the Omni for the last couple minutes, and now here you come along. That must be a sign!

Thank you!

Yes the difference is stunning - shocking - revelatory -

Good luck!

It would be very interesting to hear how the 11dB fan works out for you. It has a cfm rating of 18, which is below the original fan, meaning it is not moving enough air... I got the 15 dB one and it is rated higher then the "avid" one. It is a lot more quiet, but not silent...

Hi Johan,

Thanks for the note - I couldn't find any specs for the original fan so it's nice of you to point out the difference. So far so good at my end but I haven't done anything toooooooo strenuous since the install. I'll keep an eye on it and will report back.

Which fan did you choose?

Also do you have any links for specs for the original fan(s)?
