Default Amplitude Modulation?

I'm having a hard time wrapping my head around the way Amplitude Modulation works. I'm interested in the way in which the carrier frequency and modulation frequency are combined, transmitted, and demodulated.

Default

In addition, how does the transmitted wave interact with other waves within the space they are traveling? Do they all combine into a sum of all the waves within that space or do they all travel separately? If the latter of the two is the case, what keeps them apart? I'm under the impression they need to interact in some way.
