Try this.

Go to your utilities folder (shift+command+u in Finder) and open Terminal

Type

mdutil -i on /Volumes/NAME_OF_YOUR_HARD_DRIVE

to turn SP on

Type

mdutil -i off /Volumes/NAME_OF_YOUR_HARD_DRIVE

to turn SP off

Type

mdutil -E /Volumes/NAME_OF_YOUR_HARD_DRIVE

to erase SP index data on the volume in question (It will be recreated)

Type

man mdutil

to read the manual for the mdutil (Meta Data Utility)

They have changed that in the toubleshooting link. Now they recommend setting your audio drives to private.

I have a LE system with spotlight on all drives indexing, no problems.
On the HD system, I had to shut down SL for performance reasons (it has to handle higher loads track- and plugin-wise than my LE system)

If you want to run with Spotlight off, or need to control it, I'd recommend Spotless from Fixamac: http://www.fixamac.net/software/spot/

You can control which (if any) drives get indexed, if new drives on the system automatically are indexed or not, and provides an easy GUI to control Spotlight.

best,
rich

The reason we have you set it to not index (or private mode) is that, if you're recording and it starts to index a drive, you can run into errors - possibly interrupting a great take.

It's in the preferences. Drag all your drives onto there and install EasyFind to search (clumsy but better than endless indexing). Good luck.
