I can talk about an SSD system drive. They are awesome!! My MBP loads in no time and Pro Tools loads very very quickly. Way quicker than my old 7200 rpm drive, and puts the stock 5400 prm drive to shame. I'm using an Intel X-25 fwiw. If you're at all interested and can justify the cost I recommend it.

RE: using thunderbolt drives

I am running 2 Native systems on a 2011 iMac and 15 inch MacBook Pro, and have 3 of the LaCie thunderbolt drives (2 work drives and 1 sfx/sample drive)

Here's my impression so far:

Pros
1. Thunderbolt is super fast. It feels like I'm using internal Sata drives, which is always one of the things that kept mobile systems and smaller form factor
Computers from being a serious audio work option for me. I can see the MacBook air actually becoming a viable audio workstation with this tech.
2. You can daisy chain quite a few drives with no performance hiccups (that I noticed) I've had all three of my drives along with a 1920x1080 hdmi display off the one thunderbolt port of a MacBook pro with excellent results.
3. Simple. The OS basically just sees the drives as internal drives.

Cons
1. Drives are expensive.
2. Cables are expensive $50 (yikes)
3. Very few options still for drives.
4. The LaCie drives (which were really the only option for me at the time of purchasing) ONLY have thunderbolt. This is a real hassle IMO. Especially because Apple is still not currently shipping (and maybe never will?) thunderbolt equipped Mac Pros. I can't bring my mobile system to a Mac pro based facility without first transferring the session to a USB or FireWire drive.

Just the 160 GB. I keep my system fairly basic so I don't need a huge system drive. I also keep my iTunes library on the second HD, which helps a lot also. I've contemplated reinstalling the OS, and may if/when I decide to go to lion, and installing the absolute basics. If I did that I'm sure a 64 GB drive would probably work fine.

Wow, sounds very organized. What kind of new 4 bay racks do you use?
Also what do you use to close HDD?

Thanks,

i'm on the way to buy my first sdd and on my list there are the owc 120gb 3g and the intel 320. both are not the latest but seems to be a safe way for mac.
with ocz i saw more user with problems.

if you have a sata2 connection many user said they had problems with 6g ssd. for a system drive even with a "normal" itunes libary i think 120 or 160 gb are more than enough.

AFAIK,

most relatively cheap SSD's are optimized to READ performance, which is nice for system drives but bad for recording drives. So if you're going to be using the SSD on recording/playback then take a look at WRITE performance and the best drives (IMO) are the ones which have similar r/w performance.

There are also PCI-express SSD cards, which cost more but perform very nicely for the above mentioned reason.

Just a thought...

I like my intel x-25. IMO they seem to be the best all around, but that's just from what I've read. I don't have any experience with other brands.
