recording 64 tracks at once
Hi,
I have an unusual tape format which is outputting 64 tracks. I need to record all 64 together to maintain the integrity of the their sync. I'm looking at the MADI io as a solution, but does anyone have any recommendations as to how I can get my 64 analogue channels into the box? |

Re: recording 64 tracks at once
The MADI IO only works (and interfaces) with Protools HD cards (HDX, HD Native, or TDM).
Also, regardless of which HD interface you use, Protools will only allow recording of 64 tracks if you are using one of the HD systems with HD software. There's no way to do this with non-HD Protools. Non-HD Protools is limited to 32 I/O for recording. |

if this is a one off it it probably better to subcontract the transfer out to someplace that has the equipment

Re: recording 64 tracks at once
I've never heard of a 64 track machine but Is there any way you could stripe the tape? In the old days when our 4 or 8 tracks needed more tracks or when syncing to MIDI we used to stripe our tape everyday in order to do 2 passes and our DAWs would lock right up! You must have the machine if you're going to play back right? Sacrifice a track, they'll never miss one.

Re: recording 64 tracks at once
One simple way to go, if you can forego protools for the recording, is using a couple of Ravenna interfaces and record 64 ch interleaved BWAV. This way you don't need a soundcard, just a gigabit ethernet port and a Dell 2808 network switch.
Record to something like Nuendo Live, Pyramix, even Reaper. You should be able to rent this, where are you located? |

Re: recording 64 tracks at once
Rent a couple JoCoe units. Then import the tracks easy and not too expensive.

Re: recording 64 tracks at once
Thanks for the replies!
I own HD Native but obviously my Omni isn't able to handle the track count. I've subsequently been told the machine can only output 32 channels at a time, so two passes will be required. That actually makes things easier as all I really need now is a couple of HD io's. Thanks again! |
