Default tips for starting?

Hi, does anyone have tips for someone who is starting their mixdown project. I am starting my mixdown after recording and producing all the tracks and want to get an idea of what might be important to do first. So far, I've fooled around with EQ on all tracks as well as some short and long delay, and I've got a rough balance and panning setup. Anyone have tips for vocals and MIDI music mixing?

1. Don't always boost EQ. Sometimes try cutting EQ in same range of other parts, that may be shouting this track down at those frequencies. For EQ, think in terms of "carving a space" for each instr. (You can't always solve everything by turning things UP! 100% of dynamic range is always the same; think instead of each part's "percentage" of the overall volume.)
2. If you use delays, try making them relate to a specific musical value, espec. when there's several different ones.
3. Listen at low volume before pronouncing the mix finished. Also listen to it down the hall. Burn a CD & listen on at LEAST 3 other sound systems (espec. your car!)
4. Generally reverb in your MIDI kybds will be crap; maybe not so noticeable while notes are sounding, but typically really ragged, fizzy reverb tails. If you've got the tracks (or mult. inputs avail from the kybd if you're monitoring via AuxIns) be sure to use your SW-based reverbs in PT, which will sound much better.

Buy books. A good one is The Mixing Engineer's Handbook by Bobby Owsinski. Also check out www.mixbooks.com. If you do a search on this forum for specific things like eq / compression, etc you will also find a wealth of knowledge.
