Default The dreaded "unable to locate digidesign hardware" error

Hi Guys,

Had PT 8.0.3 running on Vista 32 bit for many moons now. Just did a clean install of Win 7 32 bit Home Pro with PT 8.0.3 Full install and after updating the ilok drivers (to get rid of the BSODs) am now getting the "unable to locate digidesign hardware" error. Have reinstalled both windows and PT thrice, tried new firewire cable and different firewire card.

Here's what Sandra says:

Your Sandra says you're running Vista. Kill the net card too, but I doubt thats an unable to locate hardware error.

What interface do you have?

Mike.

Thanks Mike,

Yeah that Vista thing is weird. Did a fresh install of Win 7.?

I'm running a 003 console. Been working fine for years on the same machine with Vista. Built Win 7 on a different disk and dual booting. Console is still working fine on the Vista partition and yes... double checked that the Sandra report I posted above was generated from the Win 7 install.

Try all the available driver choices for your firewire(I think Legacy was the recommended choice, but check others if that does not work)

Did you use the latest version of Sandra? Older versions do not recognize W7 as well as many newer hardware.

Thanks for your comments thus far still no joy.

I have now been through every available driver choice for the firewire card - same issue.

Have updated my Sandra version and posted the new report below:

The strange thing is I have a dual boot Win 7/Vista machine - I can boot up the Vista partition and PT 8.03 works fine - rock solid. If I boot it to the Win 7 32-bit partition it can't find the hardware.

Didn't "Hot-swap" that Firewire cable at any time, I hope? It fries the controller chips.
Also note that DELL FW controllers have been a real crapshoot with Pro Tools.

Thanks for your response sw rec. Nope - never hot swapped - as I said it all works fine on the same machine when I boot up under Vista.

I have that same issue in Win7, although for me, if I turn off and on the 003 several times once the machine has booted up, eventually the link light starts to blink, and then it will work. If the link light isn't blinking, than the computer doesn't recognize the 003. It is a dual boot system, and in XP everything worked perfectly all the time. I am hoping that with the next driver update this issue will be fixed.

If your device is showing up as an unknown device, ie: Digidesign&_003Rack.., try what worked for me...

(I'm going from memory here)

select the unknown device and select update driver.. choose the option that allows you to select drivers for sound device and then use the Digidesign 003Rack driver.

You will get a message saying that it probably won't work and that the driver is uncertified etc... choose it anyways. The 003 will work normally now.

For me, Win7 64 insisted that I had a Digidesign&_003Rack.. I don't know where the &_ symbols came from but oh well..
