Default Avid Mojo and Pro Tools 7.1 HD Integration

Hi,

I have recently purchased a Mojo and a new HD setup for the studio. The only way I seem to be able to get video to output to my external monitor is if I capture it into Pro Tools or if I export a linked video OMF or AAF from Avid's Media Station software. With Media Station the importing process can be quite long so I'm hoping to skip this step. What is the file type that Pro Tools needs in order to play video out of the Mojo? I've tried many DV formats that I've exported from Quicktime Pro, none work. Is there a specific file type that I can ask my clients for rather than having to go through a lengthy conversion process? I'd like to not have to use Media Station at all.

I've found info on the Pro Tools site (see below) and it hasn't been much help. Apart from this there doesn't seem to be much other information floating around between the Avid site, Digidesign site and this forum. If anyone could help I would really appreciate it.

Thanks for your time.

Hello,

Mojo only supports Avid video... So you can't play QT movies directly. Converting with MediaStation is the only way to go..

What is the extension of an Avid video file? What kind of a format is it?

7.2 opens Mojo to just about any QT format ever used

I don't know that you can ask for extensions, per se. If your video is originating on an Avid, just ask for one of the resolutions on that chart you listed. They send you an OMF or AAF (AFF?), you import and away you go. Avid formats are pretty much just Avid, as far as I know.

(If you really want to know, Avid media I've seen use the extension *.omf.)

If the video is not coming from an Avid, then the only way I know to get it into my Mojo is from QT, then convert it with MediaStation (like you have been doing).

And, like was just stated, with 7.2 we will be able to use QT directly through the MOJO without any conversion.

Hope this helps. If I'm inaccurate, someone please enlighten us

When picture is edited in Avid, you can ask for a picture OMF...
OMF version 2.0 should do the trick. In my experience the picture OMF came non-embedded, thus with
linked video-files. Just import OMF with "import session data" command, and it works perfect, and on the
right timecode! (That was a struggle for me as wel, putting the clips in MediaStation on the desired timecode...)

I hope this helps! You can skip the Mediastation in this case...

The video file formats that Avids, as well as Pro Tools with Mojo, use are OMF or MXF. Avid video files will either have an .omf or an .mxf extension.

When digitizing in Pro Tools via Mojo or V10 the video files created are MXF (they'll have an .mxf extension).

QT Pro is not able to create these files. Other apps/devices that create MXF, other than Avids and Pro Tools, will create Avid/Pro Tools compatible MXF video media including the new Panasonic HD video camera, etc. (although I'm not sure that any of this has been tested or is officially supported in Pro Tools... but should work just the same).

As already mentioned, Pro Tools 7.2 will allow you to import QT movies at just about any resolution (not all QT resolutions have been tested so it's possible that some could create problems) and play it back through the Avid Mojo with out converting it first.

Pro Tools 7.2 should be available very soon, keep your eye on the Digidesign website.
