Default Very Old Subject ... But ... Dither...

Hey guys.....

I have not yet heard the a difference using dither ...

today I decided to nail that and bounced a nice vocal recording ... Just the Voice to keep it simple.

I bounced with dither on and dither off. Then compared them both
side by side in Quicktime ..playing a group of words at a time ... back and forth on each recording.

I would like to develop my ear on this ... excluding the possibility
that I am completely deaf ... is there a recording I can put up that would
more easily show the difference ..... once I hear it maybe I can begin hearing
those differences in other recordings.

Thanks for anything.... have a great day !

Make a recording of something very clean that decays down to silence. Make it very quiet, so that you have to turn up the volume a lot. Bounce to 16-bit with and without dither. That will allow you to hear the stair-step or zipper noise due to quantization when dither is not used. Once you know what to listen for, it may help you hear it in normal level recordings.

You left out one important detail(actually 2). What is the original bit depth of the session, and what bit depth are you bouncing to? Dither would only be called for when reducing the bit rate(not sure if you knew this) and would likely serve no purpose at all if bit depth is the same before and after BTD Also, what is the audio chain after QuickTime? If you are going out a computer sound card to computer speakers, that will also mask a lot of quality(in general) and difference(in particular).

It's worth noting that if you do any signal processing at all the result is a very high bit depth that then needs to be dithered.
