Default Closet at 50\'

Hello,
Would there be trouble with mike cable runs of 50'. I'm thinking of putting cpu and192 in the closet, but that seems like a long way from the 192 to mike pres and monitors. I guess the other option is an IsoBox. Does anyone have another suggestion?
Thanks

As long as you use balanced lines, you should be able to send line-level signal down very long cables. In other words: put the mic preamps as close to your microphones as possible, and then send their output down long cables to your 192IO.

If I understood corectly, you will also be moving your computer to the closet? In that case, here's a tip. I think there's this little device that sends keyboard, mouse and maybe even monitor signals down a single UTP (ethernet) cable. This might be a very good solution if you choose to displace your computer...

You could also buy a 50' digilink cable. Put your cpu in the closet and keep your interface near the rest of your rack. You can certainly buy very long vga cables for your monitors, and usb repeater cables for your keyboard.

Thanks for the ideas. I have tried moving the cpu to the closet and keeping the 192 near the pres, but the 192 fans get going during stressful usage. That's why I'm looking to move the 192 into the closet also. I'm worried about the 50' of input cable from the mike pres to 50' of output cable to the monitors? Is that something to worry about? thanks, chas

The distance from microphone to preamp is the most critical, although 50 feet should not be a problem with good cables. Line-level signals from the preamps to the 192, and from the 192 to the monitors should be no problem at all.

What are you doing to get rid of the hot air in the closet? A fan/duct to another room?

See my venting suggestions at http://www.barnabas.com/sound/quietbox/index.shtml . I haven't updated the information in years, but you might see something that works for you.

They really shouldn't do that unless your room is too hot. they're filled with dust (and need to be cleaned out), or you have them in a rack that doesn't have ample clearance on the sides. Lots of people put 192s in racks with no clearance, and the fans kick up to high speed because the 192 needs to vent on the sides.

Mine stay at low speed all day.

There's no problem in running your lines 50'. Use quality mic cable like canare, mogami, etc. Your best bet would be keeping the mic pres close like others have said, but you could mount those in the closet as well, although I wouldn't - too difficult to keep running in and adjusting levels. A 50' run of balanced line level signal from the pres will be no problem. Think about the runs in a big pro studio.....sometimes hundreds of feet.
