Dithering to 16 bit without bounce to disk

Sometimes I like to dither to 16 bit without the "Bounce to Disk" command. There are several audio suite plugins with such a dithering option. But as long as my session is 24 bit the audio files will be 24 bit, right ?
Does anybody know a software to view the bits of audio files ? I would like to see if audiofiles which has been created by audiosuite plugins with "dither to 16 bit" have the last 8 LSBs set to zero or if these plugins just bypass the 16 bit function as long as the session is 24 bit.

I trust digi and dont care about it unless I can hear it.
