Default Re: Left PT for Other DAWS....but...

Similar story as the OP.

I've been through Logic, Studio One, Nuendo, Reaper and even Ableton, but all roads lead back to PT.

There is no one perfect DAW - I compose in Studio One and AAF/print ISO's/stem the results to PT for editing and mixing. My day job is in Post, and all of my sound design these days is in Reaper (because it's really good at it) and all of that work ends up in PT.

They're all just tools and while it may add a few extra steps to my workflow, I find being a multi-DAW user isn't all that bad. It beats trying to force a square peg into a round hole in one, while another offers an elegant solution for a particular function. It's easy to move audio from one program to another.

i use Logic but I really don’t like how it has much less focus on ‘regions’ than PT. I click a region and AFAIK there’s no way to see where the region starts or ends or its length.. i love that that info is immediately on the screen in PT.

PT is missing a lot of obvious things though, like choosing a plug-in when creating an instrument track, or automatically creating the output channels for multitimbral instruments.

What does "choosing a plugin when creating an instrument track" mean ??

Do you mean automatically creating an Instrument track when drag a VI into the edit window timeline ? (like Studio One ?)

Track Presets can cover this nicely

Same here. I used PT all day every day from 1997 to 2019 and then got bored, I guess. I worked with Reaper for a while, doing TV-post and composition. It can do amazing things but it still looks and feels quite janky overall. And having to use AA translator for every AAF in a Mac environment was super annoying.

Then I went to Nuendo and tried to make that my all-in-one. Nuendo truly is amazing and I could easily get by with it and be quite happy. But I still felt like I was missing the logic of the Pro Tools layout. Then I tried PT again after my 3 year hiatus for a few projects, and the logical layout along with the fact that it FINALLY got customizable quick keys and soundflow integration make it soooooo great for mixing, post and sound design.

That said, Nuendo is unbeatable for scoring and music, IMO. Its CPU usage and snappiness is something to be envied. I use that for composing because it is so incredibly fast and handles VSTs far better than my PT does. . But after that, I can export stems to PT and mix.

So I, too, strayed and returned. Ahhhhh.
