Fade up on "play" (old-tape-style).

Now wouldnt that be a nice feature, so people with headphones
dont get their heads exploded when (command)space i pressed.

Im Thinking 500ms fade up from -20db to current value, and of course a hotkey to switch this function on/off.....

Slower threshold shift is easier to deal with. My car stereo has that feature, and its awesome.
Ive had this chat to many other tools users as well, and suggested it to the ever helpful Brent Huber from Australia digidesign.

one workaround: intelligent pre-roll -- turn preroll OFF, use quickpunch, put playback cursor to a "better" place that will not kill the talent.

Added bonus for the talent: make a master fader on your control surface and use it.

It’s actually easier done than explained — stick with me. In the interest of speed, I’m remixing an earlier post…


One of the best aspects of using ProTools is its modular approach in building mixer components. ProTools is the audio equivalent of playing with Lego™.

AutoFade-In At Playback Start

1 - Name a (mono) bus “*PB Key”
“PB” being PlayBack. I use an asterisk to distinguish—and identify at a glance—software paths from hardware ones.

2 - Create a “PB KEY” track (mono)
Put any continuos signal on this track—a low-mid frequency test tone will do nicely. To be frugal with disc space, print a few seconds of the test tone oscillator and repeat the region to cover the entire length of the session. The nature and quality of this signal track doesn’t matter — it will never be heard.

3a - Route the output of the “PB KEY” track to the “*PB Key” bus.
Use the track’s output, not a send. It keeps this key signal out of your monitoring and printing paths, and is more efficient DSP-wise.

3b - Put “PB KEY” track in “Solo-Safe” mode.


4a - Create (reveal) Master Fader for the Headphones Path

4b - Insert Gate/Expander With Key (sidechain) Input on your “Cans Master” track
Most Gate/Expanders will do, and absolute sound quality really doesn’t matter here. What does matter is for the chosen processor to be equipped with a “sidechain” (Key) input. Additionally, for best results, choose a Gate/Expander featuring a “Range” parameter, which allows you to set the amount of gain reduction to occur when the transport is stopped.

4c - Select “*PB Key” bus as the (sidechain) Input on Gate/Expander
In addition to selecting a “Key Source” some plugins require that the key/sidechain function be turned on, or switched from “Input,” or “internal,” etc. Know thy tools.

4d - Adjust Gate/Expander Parameters
The idea is for the Gate/Expander to ramp up its output once the “PB KEY” signal appears at the sidechain input (which only occurs when the transport is running).

Threshold: Adjust to be approximately 6dBs below the level of your steady key signal.

Range: Adjust to taste/needs.

Attack: 500 ms (Adjust to taste. Wider “Range” settings will benefit from slower times.)

Release: Adjust to taste.

Bypass the Gate/Expander to defeat the automatic headphone level changes.


This basic setup (points 1–3 as above, plus an adapted set of points 4a-4d) can be employed to control numerous session behaviors, such as muting/unmuting talkback mics, muting of reverbs, etc — simultaneously. Add them to a template, or use “Import SEssion Data…” to reuse as needed.

But im going straight from interface output to SSL channel,
(1 to 1) and all processing is done on the desk.

Basicly my HD rig has replaced my Sony 3348 Tape-machines....

The Sony 3348 Tape-machines had this nice fade-up feature and i miss it....
(not going back to tape though!!!!)

you could just as easily insert a gate across every track instead of a master fader. It would work the same way. Using the opt+drag you could setup one Dyn/Exp 3 plugin and then copy it to all your other tracks. Then each individual track would fade up upon playback.

Ok it did this:
Waves C1 gate - made my setting - saved preset - set preset as default - set default dynamics to Waves C1 gate.

Now i just option select "Waves C1 gate" on first insert and thats it.....

Its on all tracks and the setting is there from the start.
