Default Too hard to wait for G5, G4 DP 1.25 too tempting!

Ok someone stop me, but I just don't want to wait for the G5s to sort themselves out with DIGI. The G4 DP 1.25s have been reduced in price loads, and on the benchmarks, I noticed that they do perform quite well in relation to a G5. Maybe this would be a fine computer to get for the speed that I need?

Someone tell me that the G5 is the better way to go and will be faster, and a better buy etc...

I know this debait has been done to death, but I really don't know where to turn any more.

Patience...?

For the price it's a great deal! I have the dp1.25 and it's so much power!...I have more than enough power for 24 track sessions...Occasionally I run out of power if I'm running a ton of verbs, but honestly I'm really satisfied w/ this machine!

The G-4's are proven solid performers with Protools, and as a powerhouse computer in general with any application. Any fo the laster model dual processors will provide excellent performance for PT6. Our dual 1Ghz G-4 QS performs fantastic for us jsut running PT 5.2.1 on OS9.2.2, scoring 24/12 in a (5.1.1) davec test. (we haven't run it yet with the beta 32 version) I've run 32 track sessions with no problems.

The G-5 is an unproven newcomer, not capable of running Protools at this point as shipped. (see the aerious posts on the forums regarding this) While I'm sure they will eventually, why be a paying betatester when you can spend much less money to have a proven reliable machine?

probably only the dual 2.0.
If I remember correct, you was looking for single 1.8. Why Apple - after G5 announcement - retired dual 1.42 and downgraded it to dual 1.25 (no "dual-boot" excuses, please)? Maybe because it was as fast as G5 1.6 and 1.8? Probably I'm wrong, but when you'll decide to go G5, go with dual. I'd suggest to wait next release. In the meantime, consider audiosuite processing for heavy projects.

I'd let richer guys be the beta testers....

Hey maybe you guys are right, this just changes everything, Im just not sure what to do really. I had my mind set on a 1.8 G5, but I dont think I can go wrong with a G4!

Its proven, and fast.

Also, if I ordered today, it would arrive tomorrow!

People please keep posting, Im just not sure. I dont have lots of money.

What price will you pay for the dual G4?
In a quandry myself being a 001 owner (G4 400 mhz) I've been using the NI soft sampler and the mac is seriously struggling.
The G5 is certainly a temptation, but it would mean throwing another £1K at a 002 when its eventually qualified.

yup. The G5's power can really be harnessed if you get the high end dual processors.
I use a single 1. 25 G4 and its running smooth and fast. the apple buying experience is all about compromise. If you buy a high end G4, that is the Dual 1.25, dual boot, maxed out memory, and HD's the price would be way above the high end G5. BUT, of course with a compromise! The G5 has PC-IX slots, A dual G5 processor, but un maxed memory and HD's. so it will all depends on the software. If PTLe could make use of the G5's potential then go for the G5, but if not, which is still the case, stick to your old guns. Only when the software becomes stable with the new Machine will I ever consider upgrading.

BTW - anybody know which version of the MDD G4 is currently for sale on the Apple store website? Is it the first generation wind tunnel/audio problem/motherboard problem model or is it the quieter second version?

I get the feeling they're just rereleased "wind tunnel" G4's, because they're dual-boot and don't have FW800. Anyone know for sure?

If the specs say Dual Boot and they have no FW800 ports, then they are not the last Generation MDD G4 machines released in Jan 2003
(of which I have). Those must be the 2002's from the previous generation.
