they said that noise becomes present when you boot from OS9.

But no noiseat all in OSX.

Dual processor G4 are getting scarce, so get one now if you want to. After calling 7 major online vendors I finally found some at Maczones.com.

There is an upgrade kit that Apple will install to reduce the fan noise, and they are aware of the MoBo issues with some later model G-4's and will also replace.

If the specs say Dual Boot and they have no FW800 ports, then they are not the last Generation MDD G4 machines released in Jan 2003
(of which I have). Those must be the 2002's from the previous generation.

have you seen a G4 Dual 1.25 processor dual boot OS 9.2 & 10.X , 2MB L3 cache, with FW 800?
any evidence on that?

I think my conclusion to this is to wait for the G5s. They are the computers of the future, or at least the next 3 years, might not be long before the G4s are unsupported! (no im just kidding about that). So it would be stupid to buy a G4 now I feel when we are so close, even if it is 2 months or so.

Default you must hear the G5

before you get the g4 you should go to the store and just listen to the g5. there is a huge difference in noise between the two machines. the g5 is totally silent. might be something to think about if you're recording close to the machine.

I think this is a smart move. I will probably end up doing the same. I currently have a G4/500. Anybody out there using a G4 with a CPU upgrade (i.e Powerlogix?) I have read that the CPU upgrade may actually be faster than similar factory machines due to the bigger backside cache.

From Powerlogix: '
The White Paper also shows that a larger L3 cache is best (not necessarily the speed or the type) and the PowerForce Dual G4 models have twice as much L3 cache as Apple's Dual 867 and Dual 1GHz models.

Speaking of DDR cache, it has recently become common knowledge that the latest PowerMac G4 architecture, in spite of a faster bus and DDR SDRAM, performs no better than previous generation models when benchmarked with identical processors. This is also true when comparing the latest models to a PowerMac G4 upgraded with a PowerForce Dual G4. Installing a PowerForce Dual G4 card into an older PowerMac G4 gives equivalent CPU performance to the latest 2002 PowerMacs announced in August, for significantly less expense. This preserves the user's investment in existing equipment."

If anyone has any experience with this, I would be interested in hearing your opinions.

Looks like Im going to get a G4 DP 1.25 in the end. The G5s are very expensive, and I dont really think I need all that power. Plus I cant wait. I think its better to go with the stable system of a G4, can always sell and upgrade later on.
