Peaks and System sound volume slider
Hi Friends,
I recently mixed some sound effects for a game like products. They will use them in windows 8 system. Then the feedback is all sound effects are too loud when the system volume slider has set 100%. If they adjust the slider to 65% sounds good. But they must to set that slider to 100% for other reasons. So I have to reduce the volume by pro tools before bouncing to files. To get to know the relationship of the meter of system slider and peaks in pro tools. I have collected some data. But know I have no idea how much do I reduce all the sound effect. Is any body can help me to calculate ? I attach the sample data here: % slider peak RMS LU 100 -0.7 -9.6 -5.5 95 -1.6 -10.8 -6.5 90 -2.5 -11.5 -7.3 85 -3.3 -12.5 -8.2 80 -4.3 -13.4 -9.1 75 -5.3 -14.3 -10.1 70 -6.3 -15.4 -11.1 65 -7.4 -16.6 -12.3 60 -8.7 -17.6 -13.5 55 -9.8 -19.0 -14.8 50 -11.6 -20.6 -16.2 45 -12.9 -21.9 -17.8 40 -14.9 -23.9 -19.6 35 -16.9 -25.8 -21.7 30 -19.0 -28.1 -24 25 -22.0 -31.1 -26.8 20 -25.3 -34.5 -30.2 15 -29.8 -38.8 -34.6 10 -35.9 -44.0 -40.7 5 -46.3 -55.0 -51.2 0

Re: Peaks and System sound volume slider
Just do -6 dB (which is technically 1/2 amplitude)
-3dB is 1/2 power -6.02 dB is 1/2 amplitude (voltage) -10dB is 1/2 perceived loudness And don't re-bounce. If your files didn't clip in the first place, just use clip gain to drop them all -6dB (you can highlight them all and use ctrl+shift+ up/down arrows; these are the mac shortcuts) to reduce the clip level. Then consolidate all the files and it will permanently apply the change to the file. Far faster (though you will need to rename the files)

Do I subtract 7.0db by peak or 16.6 db by RMS? The -7.0 was peak read as 65%. The -16.6 was RMS read as 65% Here is a example, I have a sound effect original is peak: -12.0 and RMS :-16.9. How do I set the data in the Gain. RMS -7.0db or RMS -16.6 db? PS: I test the numbers by a pinknoise

Re: Peaks and System sound volume slider
Sorry, this isn't making any sense. The difference is the readout at 100% vs 65%. And only RMS matters.
-9.6dBFs - (-16.6dBFs) = 7 so a reduction of 7 If the data sheet you compiled is from pink noise, then the only difference that matters is RMS. When you "apply" it as a reduction to your own sounds it doesn't matter peak or RMS. -7 dB is -7 dB. If your feedback was it is too hot but sounds good at 65%, you do a global reduction. Everything goes down by the same amount. You don't calculate per clip. That's why using clip gain is an easy solution -- highlight everything and reduce the clip gain by -7 dB for every clip at once using the shortcut keys I stated before. Then consolidate to make the reduced level part of a new file.
