Default Mixing with analog console

Right now i am using a oram t-series mixer 32x8 with a hd io 16x16 analog,i am sending my mixes to the board but i would like to record the mix back to protools via the stereo out of the console, being that i am using all 16 outputs would i need a separate 2 channel convertor to do this, maybe a appogee rosetta 200,then from the rosetta come back to protools via aes.jz

I'm a little confused by what you're trying to do.

I'm not sure that you have the digital inputs available if you're already using all 16 analog outs. I was under the impression that the unit does a max of 16 ins and outs regardless of whether it's digital or analog.

Assuming that's the case, your best bet is to just use 14 out into the mixer, then the stereo mix back into the inputs of the HD IO (since you have 16 inputs), and then the remaining 2 outputs of the HD IO would go to your monitoring device (which I assume is the mixer).

If I'm wrong and you can use the digital i/o in addition to the analog, then you would use all 16 analog outs for your mixer, and then come back into 2 of your HD IO inputs, and then out the AES into a 2 channel DAC and then into your monitoring. Probably the best solution for this would be the Dangerous Dbox, which has an excellent DAC and high quality monitoring path.

You are correct i would lose 2 in and outs,i could also add another hd io but that would be expensive ,but would give 30 outs to the board then i could record that result back to pt using 31 and 32 on the board. Time to start saving my pennies.jz

Don't confuse inputs with outputs. You should be able to use all 16 outputs to feed the mixer, and then use any pair of inputs(on your 16x16) to bring a stereo analog signal back in, to a new track. Just make sure the new track is set to either NONE for output, so you don't feed the returning mix back to the console(creating a feedback loop). What I would do is mute the "MIX" track that you are recording to, and monitor off the console.

Thanks for this post! I've been trying to figure this out for some time now. I have been going back out through my Mac book Pro 13" via sdif with another sound interface to accomplish this. Thanks to albee1952. I've got it working. This is a much better way!

I am also using 2 ubk fatso's and 2 clariphonic eq as hardware inserts in protools, would it be better to hook up those units to my buss inserts on the board, then take the 16 outputs of the hd io back to the board? jz

IMHO, none of the above! This is where something like the Tascam DVRA1000HD is the best possible solution, IMHO. The issue is that you want to get a stereo 2-track down, yes? Well playing back through the console only to go back into Pro Tools to record a new stereo file that only has to be dithered again is a workflow issue IMHO. Having a dedicated stereo recorder makes sense not only for analog setups, but in the box systems as well. Why? You can record multiple mixes to instantly cue-up and listen to, compare, etc. You don't have to import them into a PT session, dither them for final playback or burn to CD.

I was using this myself at my former studio and it was SOOOOOOO much nicer than doing what you're trying to do.

For best workflow, consider mixing in-the-box and simply bounce-to-disk. Once you get comfortable with that, you won't turn back. My 2 cents.
