Default New to ADAT

Hi,

I am using a very old system which has always done the magic for me. I have recently purchased an ADAT 8 ins/outs optical board (U-PHORIA UMC1820) and done extensive googling to try get it to work.

I can get the pro tools suite to accept the ADAT as the clock source at 48kHz and I can hear audio from the headphone outs on the ADAT board.

I have tried all sorts of permutations of busing and interfaces (which I don't fully understand).

While the ADAT is new and the rig is old, I am wondering if they are not compatible. If they are compatible, would anyone have advice on what I should be looking for to get a signal on a recording enabled track?

Thanks in advance

In Pro Tools’ Hardware Setup, make sure optical format is set to ADAT and clock source is set to optical. In I/O Setup, default the input, output, bus, and insert tabs. This will make sure you can see all the inputs and outputs at your tracks.

The UMC1820 won’t be the simplest thing to use to get expansion with your 002 since it is a USB audio interface. A simpler option would be the ADA8200. But, you can configure the 1820 to send the mic ins to the ADAT outs via whatever proprietary cue mix function they provide for it. You’ll always need to have the 1820 plugged in via USB to do this even though you won’t be using the USB connection to get audio into Pro Tools. The 1820 clock source should be internal with an ADAT cable going from the 1820 output to the 002 input.

Thanks Top Jimmy,

Unfortunately I am still struggling. If I connect the USB to the MAC, it crashes and if I connect it to another machine, nothing happens.

Also Im not sure what you mean by "proprietary cue mix function". I know the protools accepts the UMC1820 as the optical clock source as when its disconnected the protools reports that it's switching back.

Any help would be great

Thanks a million

It's not that the old hardware is incompatible, but if your sig is correct and you are using PT7 on Tiger, you cannot aggregate more than one interface together. Your ADAT box needs to work standalone.

I have no idea how that box works, but if it works standalone, you need to set it as clock master and let your 002 lock to its clock. And the clock is limited to 48kHz, there is no SMUX for 96k

If that box is an audio interface, you may need anothr computer to run it, then sync the two togeter. Not so straight-forward, but not too hard either.

But before we continue troubleshooting, please confirm if you are running PT7 on Tiger or something else.

Hi Janne,
Thanks.

Yes its PT 7LE and Mac Tiger. In terms of the interface, Its wired optically into the 002 rack. Its the only extra interface but does that qualify as aggregating more than one?

It all comes down to how you control the boxes.

As far as PT7 and 002 know they just connect to ADAT feed on basic sampling rates (44.1/48) and unless the box has ADAT input as well, it needs to be clock master. That is because the 002 does not have WordClock i/o (which was a bad decision if you ask me).

So if it is "interface" like 002 then I guess you need another computer to control it. 002 can handle standalone boxes such as Presonus Digimax LT

And how does the other computer connect to the setup?

Other computer connects to other interface with another DAW. Then the ADAT are connected together, making sure the other computer is Clock Master (as in deciding the sampling rate) and your 002 setup is slaving to whatever external clock comes in via ADAT

OK, this is getting too complex in terms of logistics. Looks like Top Jimmy's idea of getting a ADA8200 be the best option?

Yes. Or I would recommend second hand Presonus Digimax LT
