how do i install a fire wire hard drive

how do i install a fire wire hard drive with my mac need a step by step.have a lacie 120gb 7200
please help

If you have a firewire jack on your Mac, just plug in the firewire cable from the hard drive. It should show up on your desktop as a new drive.

i'm actually also having a problem with this...

40gig firewire drive from OWC.

plug it in, fire up... nothing pops up.

use Disk Set Up and the Hard Disk Tools included with the drive, but neither can find the drive to initialize it...

i remember it being tricky to initialize some other firewire disks a while back, but now can remember how i did it/got around the problem.

any tips anyone??

Go into your extentions folder and make sure all your firewire drivers are checked. This could be the problem.

When I got my Lacie external drive it came with a CD containing the Silverlining Pro software drivers. You don't strictly need this (activating the Firewire extension should allow you to access the drive ) but it allows you scan the available busses. I f you do have the disc just install the software before you hook up the drive. I'm not sure about formatting (mine came already formatted) - I believe (though I'm not certain about this) that you can't partition Firewire drives. Don't ask me why. Could be wrong anyway.

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Arial">Trash all extensions that came up when you installed the hardrive, don't use the CD that came with it, format drive with the Mac using "Erase Disk" from the "Special" menu and you're Golden!!!
