Can't monitor midi controlled sounds

Looking for some quick help...
Track 1: Stereo Audio, Input: 1-2, Output 1-2, Sampletank inserted
Track 2: Midi (rec enabled), Input: All, Output Sampletank Ch1

I can only hear the midi controlled sounds upon playback after recording. Subsequently, I can monitor the "mini keys" when played on the Sampletank interface, but I cannot record the mini keys..

What do I have set up incorrectly?

Two points, SampleTank requires MIDI Input, either from a MIDI Controller or programmed free hand (Pro Tools Pencil tool) and secondly, SampleTank should be instantiated on an AUX track.

I actually have set up "track 1" as an AUX track with the same result. I'm assuming Sampletank is getting MIDI input from my controller as PT records the Sampletank sounds fine, I just can't monitor them until they are recorded..

Is 'MIDI Thru' check? Pro Tools>Options. Is the MIDI track record armed?
