Default G4 cpu/mb question

This may be a silly question, but will code written specifically for the G4 Velocity Engine accelerate G4's using both the old "Yikes" and the new "Sawtooth" motherboards?

Thanks,

Andre

Default Re: G4 cpu/mb question

Not a silly question at all and one that is asked on many user BB's. The bigger question however is what benefits will a user see with a re-write or recompile of said code. In many cases, not much at this point, we all hope for stability but there are no guarantees that optimzed code and OS 9 will be any more stable than the present. I'm not savy enough to say if a re-write/compile of the 001 software will speed things up but can definitely say that optimized plug-ins have the potential to yield big returns, i.e. the ability to use more simultaneously. Yikes and Sawtooth both use a Velocity Engine, Sawtooth has a new motherboard with faster internal bus speeds and RAM access among other things and therfore may benefit more from optimization. However, users have reported VERY impressive results from a Yikes G4/400 and the 001 system and theoretically this will improve with optimized plug-ins. Perhaps for you it's a question of Yikes or Sawtooth which really boils down to dollars. There is some excellent info about Velocity Engine etc. written by David K. Every at www.Mackido.com that I suggest you check out and also keep reading the posts here to see what users are saying.

Regards
Gord
