7.4 was never offered as a 64bit app... The upgrade is only $150. and free if you recently bought and registered 7.4.

I have M-Powered ProTools 7.4.2, which I had purchased from Sweetwater back in 2008. However, after all these of years, I am just now planning to
install it in a new pc to be built shortly. I bought PT purely to load Serato Pitch n Time-probably the best plug-in of its kind at the time, costing me > twice that of PT-so I could transparently pitch down and/or time expand my ripped CD tracks.

A label on the M-Powered ProTools 7.4.2 box says that its compatible with Windows Vista. Does that mean that it is also compatible with Windows 7 and/or 8 (8.1)?

Ideally, I would like to know of this is true or not before I have my new custom pc built, in order to avoid wasting any time and money. But in any case, please confirm the viability of the following solution:

My main system hard drive will be running Windows 7 or 8.1. But I
would then also install a 225 GB solid state drive and load Windows XP Professional SP2 and/or SP3 on it. Then I would install the driver file for
my M-Audio 2496 card. Then I install the card. Then I install ProTools 7.4.2.

Then (as per the precautions I’ve read) audio file creation, processing
and storage using Pro Tools are to be done only on drives other than the system (Windows XP) drive, such as my separate internal and/or external storage drives.

The professional I will hire to build this computer can then create a hot key command so that I can choose to boot up the pc either with Windows XP to run Pro Tools or with Windows 8.1 to run my other apps.

The rest of my relevant system hardware will be as follows:
Motherboard (ASUS or Gigabyte model): Z97 chipset. 16GB memory.
Processor: Intel Haswell 4790S quad core CPU.

Will the above solution allow me to run M-Powered Pro Tools 7.4.2 without any problems? I am especially concerned about being able to output audio from the M-Audio card's SPDIF jack to a high end DAC (i.e. Wadia, Berkeley, Lavry, et al).

Also, I have yet to buy the required iLok USB key. When I do so, should
I insert the iLok into my computer’s USB port before or after I install ProTools 7.4.2?

Shelling out another $300. for a PT upgrade is not an option for me, as
I never do anything beyond two track stereo. And I certainly can’t write it off as a business expense, like most who post at this site probably can.
So I hope this solution will fly.

Please advise. Thank you.

no, PT 7.x is not compatible with Win 7 or 8.x
missed the XP dual boot, yes that will work
if you never registered it, it may auto upgrade you. but I don't know if it will

Yes, as a last resort, I certainly would run PT 7.4.2 on a separate (SS) drive under Windows XP SP2 and dual boot it with my main Windows 8.1 system drive.

But will PT 7.4.2. run on Windows Server 2012?

That way I could run all of my apps on one OS from one drive.

If this won’t work, please explain why not and/or refer me to documentation that says so.

Please advise. Thank you.

you can try it but I don't think it will work. ~8 year old 23 bit app that wants direct access to it's interface running on a new 64 bit OS that is designed to monitor every I/O action (same basic problem with W7 but worse)

worse case, you have to wipe the drive and start over

But my Windows XP Pro disc is only the 32 bit edition.
Will it run on my new Intel Haswell 4790K CPU/ ASUS Z97-A
motherboard / ASUS R9 270 video card?
