Re: macOS 10.14 Mojave and “cheese grater” Mac Pros
How do you power the 7970 in combination with the HDX card?

Re: macOS 10.14 Mojave and “cheese grater” Mac Pros
For my system, I steal the power from the optical drive bay to go to the graphics card and my HDX cards come from the main (normal) supply.
Who uses the optical drives these days anyway

How did you route the power wires out of the optical bay? I was going to go that route for the HDX power but couldn't come up with a neat solution without drilling holes, etc.

Re: macOS 10.14 Mojave and “cheese grater” Mac Pros
I'm running an RX480 on my cheese grater on Sierra, which is fine (no boot screen though as mentioned). The only issue is, last time I checked, the High Sierra upgrade needs an Apple-flashed GPU for the installer (you can remove it post-installation). So being lazy I'm staying on Sierra for now. No idea if it will be different for Mojave.

We have an article on this very topic recommending a range of options depending on your budget... How Do You Find Mojave Compatible Graphics Cards For Cheese-grater Apple Mac Pro 5,1 Computers?
On the Boot screen issue, other things you won't get if you don't get a Mac flashed graphics card are screens like which drive would you like to boot off, which you get when you hold down Option when you boot. Hope that helps... Mike |
