This depends on where and what you're doing with it. If you haven't recorded it yet, Let me suggest that you record it with a ribbon mic. I've had good luch with an RCA DX88. Next is this part of a jazz ensamble? or an Orchestra or is it part of some eclectic ensamble that uses this as a bass instrument. Or is it used as a solo instrument. Regaurdless you must allways cut out the frequency that the Clarinet lives in. Not doing so, will make MUD pounds of Mud.

"Bass clarinet in the mix"

I have this problem too.

I found that a gate with zero attack and a long release helped

(threshold was around +infinity).

Of course, these are only guidelines.

Hey... stop making fun of the bass clarinet. Marcus Miller has used it quite nicely with some of his work.

I usually use a Contra-alto and pitch it up a 5th, then hide the whole thing next to 4 or 5 french horns. Keep some Contra Bassoons nearby for added uselessness.

Yeah, what's all this negative talk about the bass clarinet? Bass clarinet can add a great texture, round, full and satisfying. It can be plaintive, frolicsome, and everything in between. What you do with it is going to depend somewhat on the player, the instrument and the context. Check out Eric Dolphy if you want to hear some wild bass clarinet work.

Contra alto is also a lot of fun. I own and play soprano, alto, bass and contra alto clarinets (thanks, eBay). When you play the bottom three notes of the contra alto clarinet, your head vibrates so much that the your vision gets fuzzy. Animals will stampede. Loads of fun. I've been looking for a deal on a contra bass. I can only imagine what that's like. I've heard that there are some contra bass clarinetists who are able to do a pretty decent digeridoo imitations. It's definitely a substantial piece of plumbing.

In case you want to pursue this further, I recommend...

(An added bonus is that there are no angry Waves threads on that forum... ...yet.)

From the clarinet forum:
