Default Blackmagic/Pro Res converter

Just ditched the Avid Mojo for a proper quicktime playback device and have a question - obviously Pro Res is the best looking for playback but without FCP installed, how do you convert your files to Pro Res and what settings do you use?

Obviously it would be easier to install FCP etc for the codec but I have fears over what it will do to protools etc. Is installing just Compressor an option?

Harpertown 8 core, Mac OS 10.5.8, Blackmagic HD Extreme III, ProTools Hd2 v8.01cs1
Any opinions are welcome
Thanks
D

I have Final Cut Studio on my Pro Tools machine and they live happily together.

all you need to do is drag the codecs into Quicktime's appropriate folder, I did this from my FCP partition. FCP is not installed on the same partition as PT.

I use FCP with PT too and have done so for many years as in the past you couldn't have AVID on the same system so no problems there.

Here is a free and very useful piece of video transfer software that you may also find useful : http://www.squared5.com/

Actually, Apple makes the Pro-Res available for download by itself. Go to http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1

I think he's talking about a way to convert files to ProRes. The Quicktime download is just a decoder which allows your computer to play ProRes files. The only way I know of to have encoding ability is to install FCP.

Agree with Gary regarding squared5 mpegstreamclip. Very valuable tool and its free. Add the perian plug and divX and you can convert just about anything to anything. I use it everyday, especially when recieving H264 which I then convert to Prores for playback.

I just use Quicktime 7.6 to convert. Streamclip is just as good I'm sure .

Thanks everyone for your comments - I too use mpeg streamclip and its a very handy addition/alternative to Quicktime Pro.

Jerome (or anyone else who might know) - tried pulling the quicktime components from one of the editors FCP macs from MacintoshHD/Library/Quicktime but haven't had any success with the Pro Res encoder (the others seemed to work ok though) - can anyone confirm if there is another location for them or is this the one?
Thanks
D
