You won't like the answer

Basically if you are a PC owner, you buy and test mobo, CPU, RAM, FW boards and everything else till you find the complete system that will run PT. So free up some time, open up a store credit card, and get to know your store's return policy on hardware.

Avid's support for PC users is to go buy a mac. There will never be patches/fixes for AMD processors.

AMD has not been a qualified processor for a long time. It is on the website which processors they qualify.

But I know people running on AMD processors with no problems.

I am running AMD and seem to have solved inital problems. Try disabling the on-board sound card. That's what worked for me, although my bluescreen was about the interface and not PT.

Cheers guys,

Pretty much what I thought, Im looking at funding a Mac Mini just for this software.

I have a unibody macbook but no firewire port so have to sell that and upgrade again.

Gotta love Avid

Getting an AMD system going is not that different than doing so with an Intel system. First crucial detail that applies to both, is that you should run the CPU builder's chipset. So the fact that the OP's PC has an Nvidia chipset on the mobo is a good indication that the system will be problematic. While there is a lot to do with wether or not certain components will work together, the most important thing for PC users is to properly tweak and optimize the BIOS and Windows install. If this is too much trouble or just simply something people don't want to deal with, which is totally understandable, then buying a Mac is not a bad idea. You still have to optimize your Mac, but you may not deal with all the trial and error stuff that goes along with a Windows PC.
