Default New G5s...1.8 dual has normal PCI slots? and AMIII

Just a little confused on the PCI slot
offers... did they revert to the older PCI slot
config which would accept older 5v PCI cards
for only the 1.8 model?

33mhz PCI slots would accept the AMIII?

ref: apple web site
thanks for yr

Hmm....is the voltage of the PCI slot related to the 33mhz number? Anyone have any clues? I searched the Apple site for infor on the PCI slot voltage but came up with zip.

I think we need a tech to give us the whole story.

I spoke to an Apple reseller and asked them to contact Apple with an answer to this question. He came back and said that Apple had reverted to the old PCI format due to the fact that they had had a number of complaints about the all the 3rd party PCI cards that were made redundant with the PCI-X format. While he did not specify what voltage the slots could handle, I made sure that the Apple reseller (Actually from the tech dept) asked him about this point. So one could assume that this is a given.

If this is so it leaves a couple of important decisions for Digidesign.
Will they resume some support for 001 users?
How much support would be needed to get the 001 up and running on the revised G5 1.8 dual?

Its all about the signalling voltage. PCI 2 would do 3.3V or 5V signaling. PCI-X only does 3.3V. The AM3 and Digi001 have to have the older 5V signaling. It may be possible but I doubt that Digi will support it.

I still own an AM3, as a spare. Somebody mail me a new G5 and I'll test it out

I don't think we should assume anything. It would be nice if Apple and Digi posted some real technical documentation on these PCI voltages. I find it absurd that any third party PCI cards that were used in a G4 are now obsolete with the G5. Bad Planning IMO.

If in fact Apple did revert back to the old due in part to pressure then it'd be one of the best moves they've made. And Digi should follow their lead and continue support for the Fail-Free 001

Still looks bad fro AM III and 001 folks ... I found the information below in the CIP (Customer Installable Parts) Guide for the G5. THis is in reference to the lower-end models both Rev 1 and 2 that have the standard PCI slots (not PCI-X).

"The PCI slots can accommodate mixed-voltage (5.0 V, 12 V, or 3.3 V) cards but only at
3.3 V signaling, with 32-bit or 64-bit data widths and a 33 MHz frequency. You can add a
66 MHz card to a 33 MHz PCI slot if the card can operate at the lower 33 MHz rate."

Since both the AMIII and the 001 need 5V signalling I think were out of luck here.

Damn! You had my hopes up there for a second! The only thing preventing me from buying a G5 is that I cannot take my Digi-001 with me, which means that I'd have to upgrade to the 002R. This ostensibly adds $800 to my G5 purchase. Oh well, back to the drooling...
