Pro Tools 2018.X on OS X Mavericks 10.9.5?
So is anyone using a version of PT 2018 on Mavericks 10.9.5 that can attest to the performance of this setup?
P.S.: To those about to say that Mavericks is no longer secure, you're right, but there's really minimal risk when you're not connecting drives that aren't yours and don't really surf the web on that specific machine, so I'll take my chances.

Re: Pro Tools 2018.X on OS X Mavericks 10.9.5?
ProTools 2018.x versions use METAL to handle its GUI.
Mavericks does not support (preceded the introduction of) METAL. macOS El Capitan is the first that introduced METAL on the Mac. Good luck.

So this means then that anyone with a cheesegrater Mac Pro is out of luck for running PT2018 unless they change out their video card? Standard cards that come in those machines don't support metal afaik.

I can say that your assumption is wrong. You can run PT 2018.X with a GT120 which is the stock 2009 4,1 cMP GPU. I use that along with a more modern GPU being the RX580 So I would also go back to the earlier comment and say its pretty obvious that PT doesn't require metal supported GPUs when I can run it perfectly fine with a GT120 which def isn't metal capable

Re: Pro Tools 2018.X on OS X Mavericks 10.9.5?
Thanks everyone for your comments, I have a feeling Avid's going to release a new version of PT this month (because they already released MC First 2018.7) so I'm going to wait until that happens and then try my luck and post back.
So after trying it out, PT 2018.4 launches on Mavericks but playing around in it causes it to crash, so it's unusable. I downgraded to 12.8.1 and it works great even though it's not officially supported (12.7.1 last supported Mavericks I believe).

Re: Pro Tools 2018.X on OS X Mavericks 10.9.5?
Pro Tools does NOT use Metal. There's a big misconception that since the introduction of Metal in El Capitan, every app somehow "has to" to be using Metal to work under El Capitan/Sierra/HS - not at all. Metal is actually used mostly in games, but for a vast majority of apps out there, including Pro Tools, Metal is almost irrelevant. That's about to change with Mojave though, but that's because Apple chooses so. I bet PT 2018.x will still work under 10.14, and will still not be using Metal in any way shape or form. As frustrating as it may be for Apple, Open GL still has to be part of the OS. And as Jack said above, the stock GPU in the 2010/2012 Mac Pros doesn't support Metal, yet PT runs perfectly fine on these machines, not to mention El Cap, Sierra and HS by the way.
