Default Control 24 PSU replacement instructions

Dear Avid or anyone:

My Control 24 power supply is behaving as Kenny Gioia described in the thread called "Blown Capacitor on the PSU Control 24", so I need to remove the PSU and return it to Avid for a $350 fix.

Before I deconstruct my desk and open up the back panel, does anyone happen to have a schematic or tip sheet on pulling the PSU?

I have the pdf that they sent me but you should get in contact with them anyway. They'll be fixing it. Right?

Here it is:

Thanks a lot for taking the time to find that, Kenny.

Yes, they'll fix it for $350 or replace it for $500.

But first I'm going to swap out the capacitor at location C20, which someone over at gearslutz claims is the one that overheats. The C20 capacitor in my Rev H PSU is already rated for 105C, which is the highest temp rating I can find for a 4.7 MFD 50V capacitor, but I figure it's worth the ten minutes and ten cents to see if it gets me back on the road today (or tomorrow).

Thanks again for the pdf.

No dice.

I've replaced the C20 cap and have the same symptoms as before. Back to Avid she goes. Thanks for your help.

Good luck with it.

My problem was fixed but now I think it's time to do the cleaning of the connectors.

She likes to give me a light show every once in a while. heh

Yes, the annual Cleaning of the Connectors. And don't forget to floss.

I thought I'd reseat this thing one more time before sending it off, and now it works. Which of course sucks.

For the record, C20 was probably okay before I replaced it. Now that it's out of the board, I've tested it with an ohmmeter and it's holding and releasing charge. Someday I'll borrow a cap meter and test it properly.

I'm thinking of buying in a replacement PSU to stick in the closet. If I do, I know the board will never fail. If I don't, I'm sure it will throw a clanger as soon as it's least convenient.

Good luck with your cleaning. If it continues to act out you should think about repurposing it as a 2-for-1 live console with light show capabilities.

That's weird. So it never was the capacitor.

But it was blinking and making a pulse sound?

Mine seems to be perfect for the last two days so I haven't got around to cleaning it yet.

I hate the idea of fixing something when it's not displaying the symptoms as I won't know if I fixed anything.

Good luck.

Yeah, I know. Maybe caps don't always "die", maybe they get "tired". That would explain the intermittent behavior.

I had a choice of two different manufacturers for the replacement I used, and they're rated at either 1000 or 2000 hours lifetime at max temp (105C), which isn't a whole lot of time. I'll try harder now to remember to turn it off overnight.

And yeah, the symptoms you described in your "Blown Capacitor..." thread were exactly what I was seeing. Who knows. Back to the good stuff.
