Default Can I Make A Suggestion re OS Compatibility?

Hey all,

I guess this is aimed at AVID, though I'm posting here as it's pertinent particularly to Mac PT12 users.

When searching to find if PT12 is compatible with the latest Mac OS (ie looking at the Technical Alerts on this forum, and also all the linked AVID sites regarding compatibility), the wording of almost all the current compatibility is pretty lazy.

On only one of the linked sites (the PT12.6.1 page) does it say compatible with Sierra 10.12 and 10.12.1.

I'm an old enough hand at ProTools to know that this means that 10.12.2 is *not* yet compatible, but this isn't explicitly mentioned on this page.

On all the other compatibility pages, specifically the Sierra compatibility page, and also the PT12 system requirements it states that Protools 12.6 *is* compatible with Sierra.

Can I suggest that this is pretty misleading, and for a new Protools user this could create some serious issues... I know that 10.12.2 may well work fine, but there have been multiple instances in the past where incremental OS updates have proven to have serious effects on PT stability (10.6.9 anyone..!!)

Surely it makes sense to be a little more careful in the wording of these documents? If they are going to exist in the first place then adding a couple more words to be a little more explicit (and actually factually correct!) would potentially save a lot of grief in the long run, particularly for newer users.

Surely the wording could very easily be: "Protools 12.6 and newer are compatible with 10.12 and 10.12.1 Support for newer OS updates will be confirmed in the future."

Agree with this but there were never a 10.6.9 version, the last version was 10.6.8 so we won't remember that OSX version

And Avid website has never been that easy to navigate or understand all the time so I will forward this to Avid support.

Ah yes, my bad... I meant 10.3.9 (which broke Quicktime)

10.6.9 was the phantom OS which was announced with iCloud but never was released and was rolled into 10.7

Well spotted

Got it

I will forward this today so Avid atleast see this post and then decide if they want to help us and themselves to be more specific and easier to understand how the versions work and with th which OS

Thanks for the idea. Good thoughts there.

Absolutely. It would make sense if this was a very obvious link in the Technical Alerts section (a Sticky)... Especially as it's not clear how to get to this page when simply searching in the AVID website.

I really do feel that this sort of information should be made as easy as possible to locate (and where it's referenced elsewhere it should be complete!)

...so just thinking about going from 10.11 to 10.12, that chart suggests 10.12.2 isn't supported, but not sure how I can upgrade to 10.12.1 from 10.11.x, since it would default to 10.12.2? (relatively new MBP user...)

You need a macOS Sierra installer that was downloaded from the App Store before the release of 10.12.2.

Thanks for the feedback. Will check the pages referenced and clarify where possible.

It's a good idea to download new (x.0) OS releases so they're on your drive and in your Apple account later as needed. You can also typically download incremental or combo updates 10.12.1 or 10.12.2 from Apple if you need a specific version.
