Default PC / Mac Session Compatibilty

I'm about to switch from a Mac to a PC and wondering if I will be able to open older PT sessions on the new system. Are PT sessions created on a Mac compatible with a PC running Pro tools?

Also if upgrading from PT 10 on a Mac to PT 11 (or 12) on a PC, will I have to start the purchase from scratch or does Avid offer an upgrade discount...regardless of cross platform use.

The answer is dependent on the old sessions done on Mac. which version of PT did the Mac have? Up thru PT7, PC/Mac compatibility was an option that was not checked by default. IIRC, from 8 on up, that's not an issue. Solution: open each session, select Save Session Copy, check the box to enforce PC/Mac compatibility and choose wave file as the audio format. The other detail that could cause a problem is if the old Mac sessions were done in SD II format(for the audio). Windows won't read SD II files(doing the Save Session Copy routine already mentioned solves that as well). If the Mac sessions were done in AIFF format, Windows should read those just fine.

You can install PT10 on your new PC(your current iLok will work fine).

Why?!? No, seriously I used Pro Tools on PC for years and recently went to all Mac and things have been a lot more stable overall.

That's one experience. Mine has been very happy on PC for several years In all honesty, both platforms are capable of great performance, and both are capable of making you rip your hair out
