Default $60,000.00 On the table?!?!?!?

Hey fellas. Im in a situation right now, actually have 2 offers in front of me.

I did a project fro this guy, it was 2 songs, he and his daughters sang on. Me and a couple of friends did the music for him.

I did it as a favor, no big deal just offered to do it for him for free.

Well, I mix it, burn him a CD, it starts spreading around, his boss heard it, and would like to invest somewhere around the $60,000.00 mark into a studio, and have me and a friend of mine engineer and produce.

Another guy heard and wants to do something similar. Both of these guys have money, or know how to get it.
I guess my dilema is this........
What do I buy?
I mean thats a good chunk of change, but when you are talking about a professional studio, its not like I can just go and get what I want.

I just need some insight to what would be the most important things to get.

Thanks for any help

My consulting fee is around 55K for a full studio design.

That leaves you with 5K to buy: a nice, brand new G4, 1 mic and the MBox.

Ill send the bill as soon as you provide an address. Thanks for your business.

Spend $50,000 on the studio gear, but tell them it costs $60,000. Go on a nice vacation with the other $10,000, then come back and make some music.

Seriously though, I just priced out a couple of different protools systems for my own benefit because I'm in a similar stituation. If you like, I can email you the excel file of the gear I was looking at - it's an HD system that totals around $40,000 - you'd probably want to make some tweaks, but it might give you an idea.

Well I guess you'll be posting in the high rollers forum from now on! (a.k.a. TDM)

Hmm... how about $10K each on mics, pre's, plugs, that leaves $30K for a MIX3/HD, monitors, console...

Jeez ... that didn't go very far...

First question I would ask you is what condition is the space you plan to build this studio in? Unless you have a competed control room, main room and at least 1 iso booth, you could easily spend 60k just on that.

The greatest gear in the world won't make a bad space sound good. Start at the beginning, create the space. Shop wisely for deals on great used gear. remember to budget in for your time as well.

Hope this is helpful.

Where beat me to it, but first concern is definetely space. . . If I had them kind of bones thats where my main focus would initially be. Reason being is that is what I feel degrades my mixes as is. I'm very frustrated with inadequate space !!!! Find suitable space and cutomize it to studio specs and with that kind of bread , don't skimp !!

my .02,

Regards,
