Default Can't get Sierra on 5,1 Mac Pro

Was wondering if anyone else with a 5,1 mac pro (six core) had issues upgrading to Sierra. I've installed twice and it hangs up on a kernel panic and forever loops between that and restarting.

Any advice is welcome.

Carl

No issues here. I did an upgrade from Yosemite, not a full reinstall. I have a 4,1 upgraded to 5,1. Install was a breeze. Performs great too. Try a complete reformat instead of an upgrade.

I read somewhere where you need to upgrade the Wi-Fi and Bluetooth card to an all in one, to be able to install Sierra.

I just got a 6 core mac pro today and it had el capitan and I upgraded it no issues. If you are getting a kernel panic error that correlates to a windows bsod and I would suspect an issue with your ram. Try removing some or downgrading to rule that out. Mine is cheery as hell with Sierra.

I've made firmware update from 4.1 to 5.1 and Sierra installed smoothly.

Wow! Didn't know about this. It's completely false that you need to install these to upgrade to Sierra, as I have already done so. But this will be nice to have Bluetooth 4.0 for the Continuity and to be able to use the new Trackpad 2. Also, Sierra broke my wifi, which I believe is because there is no wifi adapter driver for the 4,1 wifi card. Although I don't use wifi, this will be good to have in case I ever need it.

There's always BT/WIFI USB dongle you can use if you need.

Yeah, I know, but didn't want to. I hate having too much crap plugged in to USB. Currently have more crap plugged than I want.

Interesting because I just maxed out my RAM to 32 GB. Curious what you mean by 'windows bsod'?

I think the upgrade issue with with wifi is the 4,1 machines. Mine should be able to do this.

Thanks all.

Carl

macOS kernel panic = Windows OS BSOD, where BSOD = Blue Screen Of Death

Correct. Having said that, you need to identify what is causing the kernel panic. Have you tried starting up while holding the shift key? This will result in macOS starting up in Safe Boot. This disables all third party KEXTs. If you can startup in Safe Boot without a kernel panic, then some third party KEXT is incompatible with macOS Sierra.
