Default Help! Those using HDX,old MacPro,RX580

My 7950 took a dump in my 5,1. I bought an RX580 since I read a Bunch of folks had success with a 5,1. I
was already using a motherboard power adapter to use HDX. Now I admit I am totally lost. If this $$!! Card needs 2 power slots, where will I get HDX power? Already canceling sessions. Can anyone offer how they’ve done it with that configuration? Or is it impossible?

I just upgraded the same setup minus the HDX, I use HD Native. However, I found a few sites explaining hooking up an external PSU.

Extra Aux Power

You take the power from the optical drive area. Pull the cage up there and tap into the SATA power to run the HDX cards (takes a little work to weave the power cable down to the main slot area but it is doable.)

Also takes adapter cables (few dollars) you can find on Amazon to tap into the SATA power (more than enough there for 3 HDX cards.) Unfortunately mine is all racked away or I'd open it up and take some pictures.

I also don't remember which adapter cable you need but I'm sure someone on the web has posted step-by-step instructions or a buy list. (I do remember you need to use the PC power cable that come with the HDX cards instead of the Mac one -- along with the adapter)

When you get it working you’ll thank your old GPU for dying. Pro Tools is much happier on a 580.

Which OS are you running?

Let us know how you get on.

I’m getting on terribly lol. I’ve got a 580. For the hell of it bought an external
Power supply. Plugged in card to Mac. Tested power supply (it’s working 600w). Plugged supply into wall. Plugged 8 pin into graphics card. Fans didn’t spin. Nothing works. I’m a longtime Mac user (since 93). I’ve never done this and live way too Close to a river. I wanna throw everything in said river. I’d be happy if the 580 fans would spin when connected to power supply. No dice.

Even crappier, I managed to buy the one damn supply where you need it to jump
Wires on some 24 Pin connector just to make IT work.

I’m sure I’m missing something. Tearing my hair out.

I think maybe I’ve got it going. Just now remembering that this isn’t a flashed card, I waited a while when I booted. After a few minutes, screens started up. Now I 1) have to thread cables thru pci slots in back and 2)figure out a way to
Permanently jump the pins on that power supply.
