The Sonnet one is a x16 card, vs x8 for the OWC, but it's more expensive and larger. It's hard to compare prices exactly because OWC aren't offering it without storage, but the Sonnet appears to be about $200-300 more (determined by pricing complete solutions with OWC SSDs).

Either appears to be cheaper and faster than Apple, but at the price of a PCIe slot.

From the OWC site ". As a half-length x8/x16 compatible card, this game-changer offers the versatility you need, so you’re not tied to one PCIe slot size or limited by a space-confined computer case."

Sure, but look at the edge connector – the Sonnet one can do 12,000 MB/s, twice the OWC. (Unless I'm misunderstanding things, which is entirely possible!)

I'd actually purchased the Sonnett card (and 8TB of Samsung 970 EVO storage) a bit ahead of time. I'm really glad there are at least 2 options with solid Mac credentials. I don't need the PCI slots for HDX cards--I'm a confirmed "native" guy--so I've gotta use the slots for something.

Can anyone speak to the fan noise of these PCI cards, like the Sonnet? How bad are we talking?

And for that matter, is the new Mac Pro as quiet as everyone is saying it is?

I've got HDX running with the nMP.
It isn't quiet- it is silent.

I’m pleased to hear that. The Sonnet Xmac Pro Server I’m using for HDX with a 2013 Mac Pro is anything but silent.

Are you using it with VIs? Even though they’re native, heavier VI use seems to set the noisy HDX fan off in the Sonnet. It didn’t in my Cheesegrater v1.

I’m wondering if the 12,000MB/s is more theoretical than real world. In this video it’s under 7,000MB/s https://youtu.be/yfLZq0b8NSE

Sample streaming heaven though although I think the OWC card will swing it for me because it doesn’t have a fan.

I'm not a huge VI user in Pro Tools- mostly bands/instruments.
I use Logic, Live and Cubase for VI's.
My interface does HDX and Thunderbolt- I switch out of HDX mode to do that.
