Default Distortion

PTF up and running OK. I start a new session and import a 16bit 44.1 khz WAV file (created in Cool Edit Pro) and get dreadfull distortion when I play it back. Have tried changing all settings but to no avail. Suggestions?

i had this problem, then i realized i forgot to turn off my system sounds. problem solved.

what kind of distortion. i get a detuned sound. how do u turn off system sounds anyway?
