Oups, French translation by Google ! "Carte", in French, is also a geographical map. Google has translated "carte" as "map" instead of "card". I was talking about the graphics card ...

On my MBPro (2018 / 2.6GHz / i7) I made good experience with "Turbo Boost Switcher Pro". Prevents CPU to overclock and keeps the fans low speed.
I didn't notice any advantage with PT sessions when the CPU switched to higher speed.
just my two cents

I am auditioning the same i9 1TB SSD 580X iMac (note the Stock 8G of RAM is a real limit for testing any video rendering). The CPU power is fabulous. The 580X is fine for audio and light video work. Noise is no issue as long as temps don't go up to 90degC where the fans start to ramp. An interesting thing to try is turning Turbo OFF (3.6GHz). I ran 40% load (logic meter) on a test session with mostly VIs. 70 degreesC on the CPU - no increase in fans (80 degC with Turbo Boost ON). Have lots more to do with this machine but it is much better behaved from a fan noise POV than the 2017 i7 iMac...

Of course all my testing is in Logic nowadays but that is a rock we need not turn over

DUC always a great resource though!

Thank you for the information. I must say, however, that the iMac i7 27 5k was running silently with Logic. It was with Pro Tools that the blower was exaggerated. Logic is not my DAW (I am now on Cubase 10), but it is obvious that it manages better the resources of the Mac. Another thing, because I am now in PC: no problem with Pro Tools or Cubase in 5k on the iMac. Perfect picture. On a PC, in win 10, it is still impossible in 4k ....

Bumping this. Any further opinions re: the OP's question of Pro Vega 48 vs 580X?

For running PT especially with video.

I've found that with my 2014 MBP my graphics seems to often be my bottleneck (-9073 when I'm scrolling through my session, or when I open up a graphically demanding plug like Fabfilter Pro-Q3), so I don't want to skimp on GPU on my next machine. But also wouldn't mind saving $450 if the Vega 48 would be totally overkill.
