Default Fan noise problems on G4? read

Apple has posted a separate Mac OS 9.2.2 version and Mac OS X version of its Power Mac G4 Firmware 4.4.8 for the "wind-tunnel" (MDD) models. This important update "improves fan control behavior and reduces high speed fan cycling when running in Mac OS 9," according to Apple.

Thanks a lot for this info! The fans going crazy all the time is ridiculous.

This seems to be the same upgrade that was previously available, but now posted in separate 9 and X versions.

I installed the upgrade when it was first posted. It completely eliminates the "leaf blower" effect when rebooting. It, more importantly, has eliminated the pitch/speed cycling of the CPU fan during OS9 operation.

All that remains is a louder-than-average power supply fan whine.

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Arial">Yeah, operative term is "according to apple"...these firmware updates didn't improve anything on our two DP 1.25ghz MDDs. We have
given up.
