Default VO by Phone

Got to do a VO by phone in a couple of weeks time. Any experiences? My phone has one of those dinky little mic/headphone outs that I could use. I could try to hotwire it to my PT ins. Whaddy think?

Thanks as always,

Joel

Aloha,

You need a telephone hybrid. We use a Gentner but I guess they went out of business or got absorbed because I can't find their products anymore.

Here's an example

Hope this helps

Just as a general FYI, Gentner has apparently been absorbed by a company called Clear One.

I was able to find complete documentation for an old Gentner digital Hybrid III on the Clear One website, although it took a little digging.

Spigots is right, though, this is the kind of thing you need.

Thanks for pointing me the right direction, Frank. I found this on JK Audio's website which is cheap & might be sufficient for my needs:

CellTap

Thanks again,

Joel

I have this feeling that you don't have any/much budget for this. If your going for something like the JK Audio box then I think you should look at the phone tap from Radio Shack (the more expensive one), it's cheaper and plugs into the wall jack so you at least bypass the crapy headphone amp. I believe the other boxes mentioned encode the audio so you can get better bandwidth through the system. The audio you are likely to get is going to be BAD, unless you are implementing something on both ends to improve the situation.

The director just e-mailed me about whether one could do some sweetening after, so I get the impression that quality is in fact a concern & that it might be worth investing in of the better machines after all. The comrex (gentner) is definitely more than I want to pay though, being that it's unlikely I'll need to do this that often, so I'll be taking another look at the In Line Patch. I'm hunting around on Radio Shack's site just to see what's on offer. What steps could I suggest at the other end for the best possible recording?

Thanks all for the guidance & I'll avoid the little 2.5mm jack then.

Joel

minister,

Thanks for the link to Comrex! I've been wondering what happened to Gentner.

feeling a little cheap and ambitious? here's a link to how you can DIY a phone patch. it is just a switch and a resistor and a capacitor.
Homemade phone patch
it works. we used to use one until we sprung for a hybrid.

Default Dolby FAX

If you have the ability... i.e. ISDN lines on both ends and the ability to rent Dolby FAX units, this works quite well and has a much higher sound quality.
