8 GB RAM is realy the base line for descent performance
nothing less than an i5 but it depends on what your using for VIs and PIs
working with video, i7
WD Black HDs or SSDs if you got the money

For me, its i7 or nothing. My own i5 build was a total failure for PT(works fine with Cubase though...). This is not the place to cheap out. You need power for this stuff(which means an i7) and plenty of RAM(8GB is dead minimum, 16GB is better and 32GB is what my new machine has). Also, the chipset can make or break a PT rig so don't just go buy any old i7, or you might be wasting your money. Yes, Pro Tools is a finicky mistress, and yes there are other options that will do much the same job. I use Pro Tools because I like the way it handles audio. Heavy midi users may gravitate toward Logic.

When you decide on what computer, remember this; what seems like a bargain now, could turn sour later if you outgrow and need to upgrade. If a $1k computer gives you 2 years of service(and you outgrow its capabilities), then it cost you $500 per year. A $2K computer might give you 4-5 years of service(and likely more), so it ends up being as cheap(per year) or cheaper.

I got a few good years out of my i7 950/X58A setup(which still runs 10HD very nicely), but this machine has not run any version of 11 worth a hoot. Since a friend was having great performance on his i7 3930/X79 rig and PT11(he uses a lot of VI plugins), I just built an exact copy of his machine. Just waiting to wrap up some current unfinished projects before moving to the new machine

Makes me wonder how my old system will handle the PT11 demo. 10 works okay, always has.

Im just waiting on the ilok2 to try it....then decide on a DAW (already tried studio 1 demo) and build an i7 PC with as much current power as I can afford.

an observation about audio quality differences between 32 and 64 bit systems...

to my ear the acoustic drums sound better in PT10, as if there is an unintended compression. In studio one, the sound was so real, there was more work mixing to be done to remove unwanted overtones

it seems like a strange contradiction from AVID then: I have seen a great offer online of an mbox3 + PT11 for £400 but it seems there's no point buying it unless ur willing to pay £1000 plus for a PC upgrade. You would think Avid would at least make an effort to cater for the domestic market like other
DAW manufacturers.
