SC 48 output options without a mix rack
Got a few questions about the basic SC 48 unit. This is probably stretching it a bit but you don't know till you ask......
were looking at putting a sc48 in our Church. I really only need 24 inputs now, want to use a the Avioms A-16 2, and still have access to 2 Hardware inserts. We only need 6 outs total. For this room the Portico 5045 hardware rack is to be inserted on 2 different groups. as there is no plug in unit like this for spoken word, I need access to 2 inserts as well as use of Aviom. I read that the basic sc 48 is 3 cards for input , 1 output card, and one option slot. can any of the input slots, IF NOT used for imputs, act as output slots? I want to be able to do this: 2 input cards third input slot for Aviom outs (if posable?) 1 card for standard 16 xlr out option rack for FOH iox for inserts for hardware I know thats probably pushing it BUT IF NOT: IF this is not a possibility, that the cards for inputs are ONLY for inputs then can I do this instead, (kinda a mix of hybrid outputs to feed the Aviom) : Since My Avion hub is a AN-16 1 ( with TRS inputs). Since i am not using all my outputs, can I mix some ( 10 perhaps) outs from the standard XLR out card to feed the AN-16 with a 10 XLR to TRS cannon jacks, then get the rest of my outs via a FOH IO x out 1-6 to feed the last of the Aviom cards in, and then use the last 7 and 8 outs of the FOH IOx for the inserts to be for a total of (2) hardware inserts? Or am I dreaming? If not is the only option to fork out extra for the MIX rack option to get more output cards? |

Re: SC 48 output options without a mix rack
Welcome to the board. By the way where is your church located? I've been using the Venue series of consoles since the original console was referred to solely as VENUE, because at the time----that's all that existed Now simply known as DSHOW I purchased one of the very first available consoles for my own church shortly after it was officially released. I have a sub-site at my webpage focusing on the Venue console, it's actually about 2-years old but I think there's still some great overall information there. Check it out here:
http://www.theaudioprofessional.com/VENUE.html Okay all of that said the SC48 is a wonderful console that is simple to use, offers a great deal of flexibility, and certainly a high feature set that is also competitively priced. The design of the SC48 is really a perfect mix of FEATURES v/s PRICE, and leaves the opportunity to invest higher up the ladder if your needs really require that. One major feature is the ability to now record 32-tracks directly to Pro Tools over firewire, previously it was only 18-tracks. This ONE feature upgrade I think has made the SC48 a viable console in even large-scale situations where they needed at least a ProFile MIX RACK to get the HD option just to get beyond 18-tracks. Okay to answer your question...... The SC48 is a 48-input console that ships with 16-outputs, however as you've noticed there is a slot expansion---but it's not for inputs. While there is an ANALOG OUTPUT option, it's primarily the AVIOM A-NET card that most users are buying for this expansion port. So technically you have 48-inputs x 16 XLR Outputs, x 16 AVIOM out. Instead of the A-NET card if you add the OUTPUT expansion, then you'd simply patch from there analog into your Aviom input module and then do whatever you want from there....but personally, I don't recommend it. While the Venue console IS capable of hardware inserts, WHY? The reality is that EVERYTHING has full recall including the preamps, why mess it up with analog gear? Okay there are reasons and I'm not saying not to do it---but from my point of view in the live mix, I really feel there's a huge value to full recall and instant control. The SC48 is a wonderful console, a great sound, amazing feature set, the ability to run a great deal of plugins, plus what's built-in already is already VERY good, the ability to record/playback from Pro Tools, etc. I'm a house of worship specialist, that's primarily what I do is design FULL systems for churches.....from the most basic to LARGE-SCALE systems. In fact my own church is getting ready to build a new $12,000,000 worship center. I'm designing the entire facility and upgrading (2) other rooms, to the tune of about $500,000 in audio/video/lighting gear. Feel free to email me directly at [email protected] with your questions and I'd be happy to assist. I also know all of the other consoles out there INSIDE and out, so I can help you compare one to the next. |

Re: SC 48 output options without a mix rack
For the most part, I agree with your insert assessment. However, I have been contemplating using one of the AES in/outs on my IO16 in the SC48 for a higher end TC effects processor simply for the ease of access to quickly dial up effects on the fly for festival style shows. Like all digital consoles, you have to navigate through screens to get where you want to go. Then you can start to dial up what you want. Until a console designer comes up with "virtual outboard" panels with encoders and such so you can leave plugins and processors up on a screen without having to jump around, there could be some need for external devices/inserts.

Re: SC 48 output options without a mix rack
The OP mentions his motivation for the post is to integrate a Portico 5045...which cannot be emulated with a plug-in.... yet everyone is saying the effects on board are great... i think most everyone is missing the point.
I would just use the Aviom output card option to run that system, use your extra sends on the AO16 to hit the 5045 (you only needed 6 originally) , then use the extra inputs on the third AI16 to return back from the 5045. Not a traditional Insert so to say, but should work...or am i missing something? |
