avid gate crashing a LOT in 12.8.3

I've used Pete's tool (thanks) to clear all prefs, I've uninstalled and reinstalled waves as i actually thought it was a conflict (there seems to have to be another plugin in the project for the crash to occur, any waves, any fabfilter is what i have confirmed so far)..
pro tools itself is running briskly, graphics are all good.

OS 10.12.6

Never happened before today and the update..

I insert an avid gate, hit the internal sidechain filters and monitor the frequency cuts, and that's when it usually eventually happens. Or it works fine for 2 minutes and tweaking something will simply crash pro tools.

I rely a LOT on this gate so I am really hoping others reproduce it so they can fix it quickly.

Anyone else yet? Try touch all knobs but most important is the filter which i pretty much use to control the frequency detection triggering of every bit of gating i have ever done..

I'll try all the other avid plugins now and see how I go.. let's hope it's just the gate.

I worked on this a few hours as i initially thought was a fault of vengeance, then of Joe Meek, then of fab filter then of waves L2. I was doing a process of elimination. But the crash only happens when a gate parameter is being tweaked. Only then.

Also, i sent all the reports to avid as it crashed, but one time i decided to save the crash dump to check it out. It seems like a bunch of jibberish to me, in, it doesn't look like a normal crash dump of any other program. There are all these weird symbols..

Is this some sort of encryption in the crash reports or something? There just seems to be no way for me to examine it. With other daws i can always pinpoint the plugin that actually caused it, via the report.
Anyway it's pretty obvious this time the gate is to blame, let's get it fixed.

Not sure what else i can do on my end as i really clean house the best I could.

ok, something's up here...

It's happening with d verb as well..

Was humming along nicely for a couple hours in my new track...

put a d verb on a clap as an insert, needed a seperate specialised long verb for this particular effect and only for this so there was no point using an aux, i moved a couple sliders, and bam.. lock up and crash.

So either my system is broken or the versions included in PT 12.8.3 are broken, as it's only happening with avid plugins, which is super weird.

Would be great if anyone who is using and tweaking the factory PT 12 plugins in 12.8.3 on mac, could let me know if they are having any issues with them or not.

Dec 31st can't come soon enough, as that's when i'll be paying for a year of support

hi, i just created a new session .. added an Avid Gate and Dverb .. 1st time i played through it with Loop Playback on a 30 sec loop of a song and bussed into the song from another track using the sidechain ..

1) the meters on the song track showed only the peaks .. restarted PT and all is fine now ..

2) i have been beating it up for a bit now and turning any knobs, listening to SC input and really jacking on the filters i cannot get it to foul up now ..

i will keep an eye on it ..

if you have any other Parameters to try please let me know

TNM -can you add your system, interface and OS specs to your signature? It makes it a lot easier to see what Mac you're on, RAM, etc. and help troubleshoot.

Also, the gate issue happens with using internal filters for detection, external sidechain not activated at all..

I do know one thing.. I had all my aax plugins in my disabled folder when i first started up 12.8.3 and it created them all from scratch (to do this, surely they are embedded in the app package itself).

I had cleared the aax cache with Pete's tool so wanted to first start with no plugins, then add waves, and then basically add about 10 plugins back for each PT launch, as i find when only a few are scanned at a time, there is much less chance for a startup crash.

Mind you, the one thing I have loved about PT is it's stability.. in 2 years i have had like 3 crashes, no jokes. Now in a few hours i have had 20.

So weird.

ok there is obviously something seriously wrong with my setup.. Avid channel strip crashes, but so did softube FET which has never happened before.

It's the same every time, like clockwork. I tweak the avid plugin for a bit, then suddenly the mouse stops moving, pro tools freezes and crashes.

This project only has 2 audio tracks in it so far with cpu usage of like 2%.

I guess I am going to have to clean house, and i wish i had never used the preferences tool, sigh That's the only thing I can think of that I did that i haven't used before, other than upgrading to 12.8.3

Unless in the coming days it is revealed that there is indeed some graphical bug causing crashes in 12.8.3, i am going to have to assume my install is fried.

Is there a comprehensive guide to completely removing all traces of avid from my machine, inc the app manager and pro tools, and re installing it "like new"?

I am happy to do that, and will install 12.8.3 from scratch.

I guess avid must have a full uninstall guide somewhere, i'll find it.

1) you can put all that in your signature and we will not be annoyed ... it is worse to ask !!

2) since you are on a MAC you can install more than one version .. just rename older versions (adding full verison number to name) before you install new version ... i have many versions on my systems and no issues ..

3) i have the same macbook pro as you .. and cannot repro here .. a fresh install of PT might be in order ..

4) tossing pref's should not be an issue, i use the Pete Gates app all the time

5) and just toss the PT App in the trash if you want to uninstall .. then tossing the pref's should get you there .. someone else might say, use the uninstaller that is part of the installer though ..

please post back if there is anything else to try for you !!

Hi :)

The last two hours have been spent cleaning out my system properly. The only thing I kept was third party plugins, put them in the unused folder then put that on my desktop for now.

I have even deleted avid folder in app support, as well as all air plugins, all avid plugins, all preferences, and even the installer bom files.. everything related to cloud client services, FB360 , app manager and of course pro tools.

I used easy find to do a search which finds all hidden stuff too..I was very careful which is why it took two hours, as i didn't want to delete any third party presets or projects.

So it's like pro tools has never been installed on this machine now. So this will be a good test.

I've reset SMC and PRAM and cleared out all my caches.

I'm also re downloading 12.8.3 as I write this, just in case for some reason, there was something wrong with the file i downloaded earlier (unlikely as it passed DMG verification, but you know, i am trying to think of absolutely everything here).

So now will come the task of reinstalling 12.8.3 fresh, and testing the plugins i had issues with, before i move back any third party plugins.

Oh, i also uninstalled my waves stuff , waves centre and waves preferences just in case, and will install those fresh later. I am very tired now as been up 24 hrs, so i'll let you all know if the reinstall worked when i am done and can report properly. :)

PS i should have probably added that i was at 88.2K the entire time i was crashing.. If that has anything to do with it, i don't know. Whoever tested it (thank you) are you at 44 or 48? Might be related.
